Security software broadly falls into 3 types:

• Anti-virus and spyware software
• Internet security suites which provide the above as well as a firewall, phishing filters and parental controls.
• Complete suites which do all the above and provide PC maintenance utilities.

Avoid free security software as although these systems work they only deal with viruses and not fully blown spyware. The difference between viruses, spyware, trojans is a grey area and so don't run products from different vendors to deal with different types of malware as malicious programs will creep through the gaps in protection.

McAfee, Norton and F-secure provide a top class range of anti-virus, internet security and full suite packages which can be installed on multiple computers. Pricewise F-secure's Anti virus software is the cheapest at £19.95 for up to 3 PCs.

For full internet Security Suites prices vary from about £40 depending on the features choosen.
